A new PhD position is now open in the Inorganic Nanoparticles Group (http://www.inorganicnanoparticles.net/
) of Prof. Víctor Puntes at the Catalan Institute of Nanotechnology, in Barcelona, Spain. The position covers 3 years of funding to work on research in the use of nanoparticles for biomedical applications
, in particular, control oxidative stress and inflammation, in the context of tissue regeneration.
Under the supervision of Prof. Puntes, the student will be developing the project “Cerium Oxide nanoparticles as a new therapeutic tool for tissue regeneration in liver diseases”, in collaboration with researchers from the Biomedical Diagnostic Center from Hospital Clínic, and funded by a recent award from La Marató TV3. Your role will be on the chemistry side of the project (synthesis, bioconjugation, characterization, interpretation of biochemical results), complementing with the biomedical work of our partners at Hospital Clinic.
The main task of the successful candidate will focus on the design, preparation and study of the different type of nanoparticles used during the project, which will be dispersed in in vitro cellular models and in vivo animal experimental models. This task involves the synthesis of the nanoparticles, the characterization of the nanoparticles as synthesized and the study of their physicochemical evolution in the different biological media.
Degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physics or related field. A Master degree is not required but will be highly regarded.
Very good level of English.
Very good academic record. Grade average over 2 (for the 1-4 Spanish system) is desired.
Hands-on experience (or familiarity) on the synthetic procedures for the preparation of inorganic nanoparticles and on standard characterization techniques (Transmission Electron Microscopy, Z-Potential, Dynamic Light Scattering, X-Ray Diffraction, UV-Visible spectrophotometry). Knowledge of advanced microscopies and cryo-microscopy will be highly regarded.
Specific knowledge on the biochemistry of inflammatory processes and related biological assays, while not mandatory, will be a plus.
Proactivity, team-work spirit, and good communication skills are required, to work within our group and to collaborate with the project partners.
