Applications are invited for a PhD research position for qualified students who are interested
in pursuing experimental physics research on the synthesis and properties of graphene
nanostructures using scanning tunneling microscopy. The research activity is part of an ongoing
project that consists on studying the optimal reaction path for the preparation of graphene
nanoislands of selected shape using different bottom-up strategies (see figure). Some of the
results of this study have already been published in Nano Lett., 2012, 12 (9), pp 4431–4436.
The successful applicant will extend the study in the improvement of the quality of graphene
nanostructures regarding size and shape selectivity, and study their electronic and magnetic
properties as well as their application as building blocks for the synthesis of more complex
structures.
The positions are granted for a period of up to 4 years, beginning in December 2012 or later.
The successful applicant will be enrolled in the Ph.D program of the Autonomous University
of Barcelona. A completed or about to be completed degree in physics or physical chemistry
is required. Experience in scanning probe techniques and ultra-high-vacuum environment is
welcome.
The Autonomous University campus is situated 25 minutes by metro north from the city of
Barcelona. It is a multidisciplinary environment with a large international student community.
