Applications are invited for a PhD research position in experimental physics to study the
growth and electronic properties of thin metal films with strong spin-orbit interactions. Phenomena
such as electron scattering at surface defects will be in the focus of the investigation
(see figure). The experimental activity will be based on low-temperature scanning tunnelling
microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS), with possible extensions to angle-resolved photoemission
(ARPES) and x-ray magnetic dichroism (XMCD).
The positions are granted for a period of up to 4 years, beginning in December 2012 or later.
The successful applicant will be enrolled in the Ph.D program of the Autonomous University
of Barcelona.
A completed or about to be completed degree in physics or physical chemistry
is required. Experience in scanning probe techniques and ultra-high-vacuum environment is
welcome.
The Autonomous University campus is situated 25 minutes by metro north from the city of
Barcelona. It is a multidisciplinary environment with a large international student community.
Further information about the group and university campus can be found at
http://www.icn.cat/ and http://www.uab.es.
