Junior Researcher Positions

The COMPOSE project aims at enabling new services that can seamlessly integrate real and virtual worlds through the convergence of the Internet of Services with the Internet of Things. COMPOSE will achieve this through the provisioning of an open and scalable marketplace infrastructure, in which smart objects are associated to services that can be combined, managed, and integrated in a standardised way to easily and quickly build innovative applications. COMPOSE will allow for novel combined management of object generated data (from the object data store) and real time streams. The user applications will be able to decide what kind of combination is required for each service, and will be specified using high level languages. Within the COMPOSE project, BSC will research large-scale data management for the Internet of Things, combining real-time object-generated data streams with historic data. All data in COMPOSE will be managed using a Key/Value model, from real time and in memory databases, to persistent data stores. BSC contribution to COMPOSE will allow for flexible data management strategies driven by service needs and will respond and adapt to high-level requirements imposed by services.

We are opening 2 Junior Researcher Positions. Candidates must be interested in starting a research career and pursuing a PhD degree in the scope of an international team.

Main Responsibilities

Support to the development of the COMPOSE platform
Evaluate and implement data management interfaces
Evaluate and implement strategies to manage COMPOSE data hierarchy
Preparation of project deliverables

Skill Specifications

Excellent computing skills in high level computer languages (especially Java and C++ and Web Technologies) and experience with UNIX/LINUX environments and scripting languages
Strong Knowledge of Network Protocols and High Performance Networks (Infiniband, RDMA)
Knowledge about the Internet of Things (Sensors, RFIDs, Arduino, Smart Cities)
Knowledge of application and development of Cloud Computing applications
Knowledge of any of the following Apache Projects: Hadoop, S4, Cassandra, Pig, and/or Hive.
Knowledge of Memcached or similar Key/Value stores
Knowledge of NoSQL databases
Fluency in English essential
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines and pressure
Ability to work independently and in a team

Qualifications & Experience

Having a M.Sc Degree in Computer Sciences, Telecommunications or related discipline
Capacity to interact and build strong relations with a diverse members/stakeholder/staff base. ·
Willing to travel (mandatory)

The position will be located at BSC within the Computer Science department. The contract will be for 3 years.
