The individual in this position will play a transversal role in the group providing assistance to several ongoing projects and centralizing the maintenance and management of the main databases, tools, and pipelines developed by the group. The person will be responsible for computational biology and bioinformatics support of genome-scale projects using next generation sequencing technology, help in maintenance of group databases, tools and pipelines, and administration of the group computational resources.
Primary duties will include maintenance and further development of databases, webtools and other resources of the group (see http://www.phylomeDB.org as an example), assisting in the bioinformatics analysis of high-throughput sequencing data (genome assembly, read mapping, etc), assistance in programming tasks to other members of the group, and assistance in administration of the Linux-based computing resources with the help of the scientific computing administration of the CRG.
The person in this position will integrate and collaborate with several members of the group and interact with other bioinformaticians at the institute.
About the team/ lab/ department
The Comparative Genomics group is led by Dr. Toni Gabaldón at the Bioinformatics and Genomics Department of the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG, http://www.crg.eu/en/toni_gabaldon ) in Barcelona, Spain.
The major focus of the research in the group is the analysis of the evolution of protein-coding and non-coding genes at genome-wide scales. For this we combine state-of the art computational and experimental techniques. The group is involved in several large-scale genomics studies including whole genome sequencing, transcriptomics and metagenomics.
Whom would we like to hire?
• You hold a degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or a related discipline.
• You have training or proven experience in the management of Biological Databases (MySQL etc) and webtools.
• You have extensive experience with the linux computing enviroment
• You have good programming skills in Python or a related programming language
Desirable but not required
• Experience with Docker or similar containers
• System administration knowledge
• Contract duration: 3 years
• Estimated annual gross salary: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and consistent with our pay scales.
