Barcelona Science Park: From Knowledge to Innovation

The Barcelona Science Park is a meeting point where university, business and society come together. Its objective is to promote innovation, particularly in the life sciences.

Parc Científic de Barcelona

Founded by the in 1997, it was the first science park in Spain and is an international point of reference today in the promotion of innovation, with more than 2,200 professionals working there.

The Barcelona Science Park has as its goals:

  • To potentiate quality research with the support of a wide range of technologies
  • To revitalise the relation between university and business
  • To promote the creation of new companies and institutions
  • To further the science-society dialogue and encourage careers in science

At present the park is home to 4 , 75 , an , more than 70 research groups and a wide range of research support technology. In addition, it organises more than 120 for the promotion of scientific culture and new careers in science, in which close to 6,000 people participate each year.

In 2011 the Barcelona Science Park will finish its current and it will then have a total area of 96,000m2.
 
The Fundació Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB Foundation)

The commitment of the Universiat de Barcelona (UB, University of Barcelona) to strengthening its role in the public sector, by returning to society the benefits of its scientific and technological expertise, is one of the reasons behind the decision to set up the "Science Park", taken at the extraordinary meeting of the Governing Body of the UB on 17 November 1994.

On 26 September 1997, the President of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Autonomous Government of Catalonia), Jordi Pujol, presided over the constitution of the Fundació Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB Foundation) by the UB, the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation and the Caixa Catalunya. The Foundation was created to oversee the implementation of the PCB project.

The Board of the PCB Foundation works closely with a Scientific Committee, which offers advice, and evaluates and monitors the research conducted in the Park, mainly with regard to the project.
