LOOKING
FOR SCIENTISTS WITH BUSINESS SKILLS
Barcelona has many key elements necessary to become a point of reference in
Europe’s BIO field, but it continues to lack scientists with business
skills and managers with science skills. This need was
identified
some time ago and initiatives have since been taken in this
direction.
Some prestigious schools and universities already offer formation in
these areas:
Biocat and the Economy and Finance dept.
of the Government of Catalonia have presented the pilot programme for capturing strategic
management talent to work this season with SMEs in the
biotechnology, biomedicine and medical technologies sector in Catalonia.
Who
it’s aimed towards
(Cited By: BIOCAT)
Professionals with international expertise in the following areas
- IP strategies: people
with an ability to design intellectual property-protection strategies.
This involves more than just knowledge of the dynamics of presenting
and defending patents. The idea is not to employ patent specialists but
rather people who have been responsible for their strategic management.
Abilities should include gap analysis, the design of defensive and
aggressive strategies and a vision regarding the creation of multiple
protection levels (umbrella patents, process patents, know-how
protection, utility models and trademarks), focusing particularly on
value creation for shareholders and potential clients.
- BD strategies:
people in contact with international business-development networks. The
idea is for the contracted expert to develop in-depth knowledge of a
project and its related technologies so that he or she can assist in
the design of sales packages and establish the international contact
network needed to successfully deliver on the growth process once the
start-up phase has ended (for mature biotechnology markets, this phase
involves getting international risk capital operators who specialize in
the sector interested in acquiring a stake in the company).
- Management strategies:
people
with experience as general managers or members of boards of directors
of other international biotech or biomedicine companies, capable of
bringing their sector know-how to the table, along with a network of
international contacts. Their contribution is different to that of the
BD strategists. Although they may well be skilled in business
development, their value lies more in the overall strategic vision
involved in managing a biotech company with international standards and
the potential cluster effect this can have on the international
risk-capital circuit.
- Research strategies:
scientists
with international experience and a non-academic business profile
(Catalonia and Spain have an abundance of academic talent but a
shortfall of scientists with business skills) able to provide
international references with respect to research competitiveness in
their areas of application (e.g., people who know the pipeline status
for a particular therapeutic target profile). These experts will only
be accepted for occasional, independent and critical assessment of a
specific business or project’s R&D strategy. Members of any
corporate advisory board of a permanent nature that may exist will not
be considered
